Patient Accessible Electronic Health Records (PAEHR) National Workshop

The Patient Accessible Electronic Health Records (PAEHR) workshop took place on October 19, 2006, at the Royal York Hotel. The workshop was funded by grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Canada Health Infoway and McKesson Canada. The Canadian Committee on Patient Accessible Electronic Health Records (CCPAEHR) organized the workshop; this committee is supported by Cancer Care Ontario through communications support. The CCPAEHR, chaired by David Wiljer, is a group of multidisciplinary researchers from across the country that share an interest in exploring ways of providing people with access to their electronic health information, and the implications of providing people with access to this information. The workshop was co-chaired by David Wiljer and Sara Urowitz, and was attended by over 40 people from across Canada, the US and Europe. The goal of the day was to bring together key stakeholders in the field of the electronic health record (EHR) to explore policy options for Canada related to providing patient access to the EHR, maintaining privacy and confidentiality, patient navigation and education related to details of the EHR, and institutional strategies for change. Information gathered from the workshop, together with results from a National scan of Canadian hospitals, of readiness for implantation of PAEHR, will guide the drafting of a policy paper with recommendations for implementation of PAEHR in Canada.

OCTOBER 2007

Happy Anniversary Caring Voices!

Caring Voices (www.CaringVoices.ca), an online community of support for cancer survivors was launched in October 2006. Members of the Caring Voices community have online access to current educational resources, peer support, and advice and education from medical experts. Survivors can access Caring Voices from anywhere in the world, and registered members can take part in real time chats, including several scheduled monthly events and discussions.  Since the launch of Caring Voices just over a year ago the community has grown to include over 680 registered users, has had over 3.6 million page hits and over 3.1 million page views.  Currently Caring Voices supports the community of breast cancer survivors, but is expanding to support all cancer survivors in February 2008.  We look forward to the continued growth and expansion of this online community of support.  Congratulations to Caring Voices!
